Step forward with the cavet that they also need linear epic moments laced throughout. Metro Exodus did this really well and I think more story driven games should copy it instead of copying the Ubisoft “bigger is better” approach.

Open-world felt more lile they wanted to use as a USP than it was really necessary. I’d rather have something linear that is very well designed.

I don’t mind them doing this, but I did mind the way they did it. It felt a bit half assed. They should’ve thrown in more enemies into these areas, more environmental storytelling, and more exploration. It felt fairly empty and padded as a result in its current form.

Step back. Devs need to stop shoe horning open works maps into every single fucking game.

Just like with Infinite it just felt like it did nothing for me but pad the game

My biggest problem with Gears 5 was its incredible lack of pacing.
I liked the character development, the dialogue… but it was terribly paced.

It was both. For years, many people have criticized Gears for being too “samey samey” (though most of those people would then make up excuses to justify why other franchises can be “samey samey” and get away with it). So adding a semi-open world was something new. But then you have the nostalgia crowd still stuck in 2006 that hates changes. I personally liked it. Clearly they’re getting rid of it for E-Day but if they bring it back for Gears 6, they should just go all-in and make it full open world.

A step back, the reason for me it doesn’t work is because gears of war as a franchise doesn’t really evolve the core gameplay, other games that may be semi open world might have more RPG elements or skills you can find and unlock, or currency, or just things to actually make exploring feel more rewarding

I think a step back. Same with with Halo Infinite.
Its funny, I remember years ago wishing every game was open world, now that it is more of a reality, it doesnt blend well with all franchises.
The uptick in open world or semi open world games proves that linear gameplay is still important and fun.

Uh the series ended with Gears 3, act 3, chapter 5.

It was a very interesting twist. Sort of like a spin-off, it felt more breathy but less in your face. I think the formula worked well with the storyline (finding your roots) but idk if it would work with e-day (we’re all gonna die NOW if you don’t hurry tf up)

Backwards. Felt entirely unnecessary to me. Focus on what makes Gears Gears, and make it the best it can be.

No thanks.
I’m buying Gears games for linear progression with great timing, events and art *because it’s so controlled*.

A (huge) step back. Gears has always been a linear, tightly focused, story based game. Throwing open world nonsense in there for literally no reason or benefit to the story or gameplay was a big misstep. I really hope they don’t bring that back.

Didn’t work at all and it’s stopped me from revisiting this game.

Maybe an open level in the next game but not whole sections of the game. Most of that space is empty and traveling across the world in an action game sounds kinda bad.
Themightybooooosh on
A step back. It’s part of a trend to do everything open world but come games don’t get any real benefit from it and it strays away from the identity of the game.

Open worlds as cool as they are, have become a total cancer on gaming. There’s nothing wrong with linear level based gameplay. Not everything needs an open world, games like gears of war are prime examples of games that do not need an open world

A lot of it looked amazing, and graphically was a step forward. The story was awful, and then there was too much gameplay in snow environments. Snow maps are just so unappealing to me anymore.
All GoW has to do is give us a gritty looking feel to the campaign and multiplayer maps. Thats why so many people fell in love with GoW 1.

Step back in my opinion. Not every game needs something like this, and it was easily my least favorite part of the game and felt like it was just bloating the playtime.

They didn’t do a good job of it. The open world bits were empty and pointless. Keep it linear IMO. Gears did linear levels perfectly.
