Hey everyone …quick question for the handheld preservation crowd
For those of you who store your DS / 3DS systems long-term ish, what battery level do you usually leave them at?
I rotate through my handhelds, but some of them sit unused for a few months at a time and I’m trying to be more intentional about battery health. I’ve heard everything from:
– leave them around 40–60%?
– fully charged is fine?? Heard mixed feelings about it
– remove the battery completely (for older DS models)?
Curious what people here actually do in practice, especially for systems like:
• DS Lite
• 3DS / New 3DS
I try to power mine on occasionally, but not always consistently. Realized them were almost full charged but heard that is not good. Also, my systems aren’t modded so there’s no way to know when is the 60% range.
I am currently leaving them on for a few hours to drain a little so I can tuck them in again
What’s been working best for you long-term collectors?

All these run on li-ion batteries, which should be stored with 40-60% charge as you mentioned. Just check if they are not turning into spicy pillow & you should be fine
I believe the 40%-60% is generally the correct method (from what I’ve read).
In saying that, I found my original DS Phat that I bought on release day like 21 years ago. It was in a cardboard storage box in my attic. It must have been up there since about 2008 and never touched. I pressed the power button and it springs to life with Mario Kart DS still in the slot. Didn’t last very long though before it shutdown.
What kind of Alien technology were Nintendo using in those batteries? lol
