You’re using it correctly! – the original purpose of that hole was to attach either a lanyard or wrist strap to it.
I think Nintendo gave away a wrist strap as part of the earlier 3DS family systems, but admittedly I can’t recall whether or not my 3DSXL came with one in 2012.
I can remember licensed (official) wrist straps and lanyards coming with accessory packs and as promotional items, though!
Also, the thing you attach is called a lanyard
