Steam does not allow published games to include ads in them, thus if publishers wants to sell their game on the biggest gaming platform, they must ship it without ads.
If I pay for a game and you put ads in it, it’s an instant refund. (I get promoting a DLC or the next game, one message after I open the game, but that’s it).

Thats one of the reasons steam is #1 and not even epic can “steal” its customers with free games

Tekken 8 has ads in the background of a stage, does that count?

There is plenty of games that have ADs inside their games, just not the typical image of an ad just pop in your f- actually never mind, we have those too. Those are just *Related* to the game itself so they can avoid being pulled off.
Its pretty easy to avoid that rule all things consisered
No_Yak_794 on
Let’s not act that this is because steam cares about users. This is simply because Steam can’t get a percentage of the ad revenue.
Getting ready to get downvoted by steam glazers.
PS: I love Valve and steam but I don’t glaze blindly.

Death Stranding have several ads why is it allowed for this game ?

If Steam didn’t do this then free to play games would become as bad if not worse than mobile games. Common Steam W lol
I’m pretty sure as well mobile ads have hella malware on them, and the only reason they don’t do anything is because mobile is strict on the user’s permission. I’ve seen cases of people having windows pcs infected through mobile emulators because of the ads.

I’ve seen loads of product placements / ads in steam games I’ve played. Death Stranding with Monster Energy cans everywhere is the most recent one I’ve noticed because I’m currently playing it.
How is that not an ad? Game is available on Steam and has been for years.

I think Kojima games, EA games (FC etc) would beg to differ about not having ads in their games lmao. Its not even remotely true

Didn’t death stranding have an ad of monster? Valve is probably only disallowing ads like on websites, where third parties could have a say of what to show at any given time.

Play battlefield 6 they said it’ll be fun they said pay $110 to play the game they said and then buy the battle pass for $15 they said and then watch the advertisements as they roll over your screen they said

apparently the sky above the port is tuned to the colour of advertisements.

OP can you explain more what kind of ads Steam is nott allowing? In game product ads are in many games and personally I have no issues with Alan Wake Energizer batteries, Death Stranding and Monster cans, Splinter Cell and Axe or any simulator games with ads

car x drift racing online has ads that play in the main menu and billboards on the tracks with ads on them too.

Wait…. Farming Simulator has in game billboards where GIANTS legitimately uses them for dynamic ad space for dlc for the series…..

Well, either the rules are more complex than initially thought or this is simply not 100% true.
What about death stranding or mgs5 for example. Both games contain real life product ads.

Forced ads yes (one the game stops to show you) ad like in billboards in racing games, no. That stopped because industry wide because it was ineffective and hated – like the ones in burn out paradise. So it does top mobile like ad experiences but no ads in general. Same for folks like MS and their publishing guidelines. So not really because of steam any more than because MS, Sony etc

8 wonder, what is the stance on adds that make sense in-game? Say I make a mafia remake and include period accurate coca cola and such posters and billboards on the map?
Would that be “steam legal”?

they dont have ads, but have in game advertising. A can of soda for example, or a mercedes car or something in between.
And I think thats good especially for indie games. It’s a good chunk of money that helps them build great games without throwing some brand on your face

I have no issues with ads on billboards on games, honestly, I recall NFSU2 having some, Burnout Paradise had some IIRC, but video ads or ads before I can play? That’s a big no-no, would refund immediately.

Doesn’t Death Stranding 1 and 2 have ads promoting Monster and Asus products? Wouldn’t that be ironic to have a game like that in Steam?
