He’s not wrong. They’ve historically been terrible. Only recently have we gotten a couple good ones.
Most directors or show runners either blatantly disrespect the story and characters they’re trying to adapt in pursuit of putting their own shitty spin on it to “improve it”.
Or they do the opposite and adapt something like a greatest hits album and it’s just fan service slop with no substance.

Because they keep on trying to shoehorn their own shithouse story into games that already have their own lore and stories. They just don’t seem to Want to learn from others mistakes. All of the most successful game, adaptation, movies and TV series have stuck close to the lore. Every single one of them that is deviated as ended up being a complete shit show
