Mike Straw from Insider Gaming: I’ve been told of at least two Xbox studios that are at risk of being closed by the end of the year. One of which would come as a shock to everyone.

I go Compulsion and Double Fine. Made a bit more sense in 2018 but they both seem completely out of place today after Bethesda and Activision.

    2. Man, I hope Obsidian doesn’t get shuttered. I like Outer Worlds 2 and would love to see more of Pillars or their take on another Fallout game. 🙁

Ah the vague insider click bait garbage saying everything but what the actual studio is

    4. Double Fine? Mas confesso que não seria uma surpresa pra mim.
      A Arkane seria.

    5. out of all studios at risk Double Fine would be the biggest shock (although from the business point of view it’s understandable). Obisidian will be even more of a shock (as they has some some success), but i don’t believe it’ll be them.

    6. Arkane is in a very bad spot. They have denied the rumours that Blade has been cancelled but the engines of the rumor machine usually start to grind for a reason…

    7. My prediction on the shocker is turn 10 and absorb some of those into playground for Forza horizon.

Compulsion definitely. If obsidian goes then that would be crazy. I remember seeing leaks that they were planning to release game every year for 7 years

    9. I wonder is Obsidian is at risk of just being disolved into Bethesda at this point.

      Its obviously Rare.

They just put out what is essentially a EOL update for Sea of Thieves. You only give the community the tools when you no longer need them.

I don’t see why I’d be surprised with them though. Other than SoT which took forever to get going, they’ve had a poor tenure under Xbox.

    11. No chance it would be Obsidian. Grounded is great and everyone wants more Fallout.

      I love arkane, but I wouldn’t be surpr8sed if it’s them.

Dishonored 2 and Death of the outsider didn’t meet sales expectaion. Prey 2017 was a financial bomb, Redfall is.. well, Redfall. They assisted on Wolfenstein Youngblood which also flopped. Their next game, Blade, is rumored to have a troubled development.

Despite my love for their games, their laurels only can carry them so far.

    13. Turn10 could be the more shocking, Forza Motorsport was a huge miss and it’s dead already. I know they do some work on Horizon but that could be absorbed by Playground or someone else

I know Undead Labs has State of Decay 3 coming out but everything i read about them through the years sounds like they were never a stable studio to begin with. They came off as chaotic.

Whether a studio is affected or not its absurd that employees across the company have to deal with the additional stress of layoffs/closure.

Between the rumors and the execs themselves making constant vague comments morale across Xbox must be insanely low right now.

    16. I wouldn’t be shocked by those. Pissed but not shocked. Obsidian or InXile would be shocking and I’d really devastated if we lost either of those.

Many people were saying that they headed Xbox was getting all these talented studios and before ABK I was loving it for the brand because I have been an Xbox guy from day 1. Xbox also told these studios they wouldn’t mudddle in their affairs and that they wanted them to keep doing what they do. It felt like a great scenario. Will be a big kick in the face if they wind up shutting one of those studios down. The naysayers would be proven right again.

Well he just posted its not obsidian or rare so yeah its the ones everyone thinks.

I’m desperately hoping it’s not double fine. While I don’t love all of their games, they’re one of the few working non-Indie studios with true creativity in everything they do. Keeper was one of my favorite games of the past decade and to see them fall would be devastating

it would be so on point for a failing organization like Xbox to shut down such a storied developer as Rare. I get they’ve sucked since the MS acquisition, but that’s also because MS handled them very poorly.

Why the fuck do studios just get shuttered like that? Why not put it up for sale? I feel like both Nintendo and Sony would be interested, and Sega probably would be as well.

Probably Rare. They can easily hand of Sea of Thieves to a less expensive dev in their staple for maintenance and DLC and it runs on Unreal. Also Everwilds was a big investment and was cancelled, 10s of millions down the drain.

I’d be sad if it’s compulsion as I played south of midnight recently and quite enjoyed it. But it wouldn’t really be a shock either though.

    22. Turn 10 or Obsidian/Arkane/Machine Games, Double Fine are my guesses.

Turn 10 ain’t getting another shot at Motorsport, that’s being liquidated into Playground surely

Obsidian/Arkane/MachineGames/iD Software – Rumor mill on Blade, not a single drop or hint of Quake/Wolfenstein and iirc Doom doesn’t perform well.

Obsidian I can imagine they’ll shutter to sunset their personal games and just use selected people to hammer out purely Fallout and Elder scrolls from now on.

I hope nothing Bethesda side gets touched personally.

    23. I am guessing that Turn-10 will be one of the studios closed. Probably just merged with PlayGround Games. That makes the most sense to me after Microsoft laid off most of T10’s staff last year. Forza Motorsport hasn’t been successful in years and each game has been less and less successful, while Horizon has been extremely popular and doing really well. Its one of Xbox’s most successful I.P.’s.

I would bet $5 that Halo Studios is one of them. They have mismanaged the Halo IP so incredibly disastrously that I would not be surprised if the studio is gutted and a new studio built from the ground up.
