Sorry that giant virgin tower is hideous, bigger, costs more and looks like a vape storefront

I was thinking the same thing. Red Flag Deals had a similar deal with an RTX 5070 for ~$1700 Canadian earlier this week. Definitely a better option for stationary play.

Canada’s all kinds of fucked up and you know it.

If anything this comparison does the opposite for me. The steam machine is close to a 5050, which, ya having a 5060 is nicer. same ram, same vram. If you do not have a gaming machine it definitely doesn’t make sense to buy the Steam Machine as one. If you already have one and want a companion why is this better in your living room even if it’s a bit faster?

the price is only ok if you’re rich or if you managed to sell some cs go skins

Its pretty much the argument thats been going around lately, yes pre-built pc’s are cheaper.
Buying individual components adds up to closer to the Gabecube somehow, idk how that makes sense but it is.
I bought a PC for my kids last christmas and that is when I realised the Canadian prices for PCs are completely fucked… it is what it is.

Ive built with 5060 ti 16gb, with 1000-1200$, and you can make it even cheaper

I was planning on buying the machine, but yeah now I’m considering just getting a tower. I have a series X so I just want something to play steam on.

Steam deck with a dock and a ps5 anyone?

“It’s a bit too pricey”, “the price isn’t that bad”, “it’s stupidly overpriced”, etc. I’ve already seen most sides of it. I think it’s fair to conclude that price is always somewhat relative, and only the person buying something can decide whether they think it’s worth it or not.
The same way everything has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, this pre-built is going to give you better performance; however, it’s going to be quite the hassle if you’re someone who moves around a lot, say if your parents are divorced and you move between your father’s and mother’s house at quite irregular intervals.
*(Sounds made up? Well, that’s actually an exact situation I’m in. My father is a police officer who works 12-hour shifts, so depending on his schedule, I might spend 4 days in a row at his place one week, while another week it might only be a day or two. So you can imagine the hassle of constantly moving a full tower desktop back and forth… Which is exactly why I ended up having two desktops now.)*
At this price point, I see people having the same reaction I used to have when seeing €4–5K gaming laptops. That was until I read comments from people working, for example, on cruise ships or constantly travelling and spending a lot of time on planes and in hotels. Then I thought, “Alright, now I understand why people are buying these.”

Can I get a graphics card with 16 GB of VRAM with that price?

I mean, you are buying a custom fabricated mini PC. Its a higher luxury than a prebuilt that is built on standard parts.

Valve really got fucked by the RAM and storage prices man, not to mention the new normal GPU prices. They probably wanted to sell the thing at like 700$ with the biggest benefit of the Steam Machine being it’s 6 x 6 inch size

if you’re considering a tower over the steam deck you are not the target demographic of the Steam Machine.
Though I agree it is priced a little high, that’s a reflection of our fucked-up world more than anything at the moment.

Except, it’s not the same.
No one is being genuine in all these comparisons. “PS5s are better and cheaper” and “you can spend the same and build a better pc” but these ignore a bunch of things and it makes these arguments just come across silly.
Have yet to see a parts list/build that has *everything* the Steam Machine has at the same price point (go ahead and add labor too!).

Yh the cost for the steam machine is off limits, my friend is in need of a new gaming PC, the steam machine would have been a good one had they priced it like they did the steam deck. But even Best Buy candad has better deails on gaming PCs than the price of the steam machine

Haven’t we agreed on that the price for the SM is awful?
But price is not everything in this context, the most alternatives that someone can get for the same price point are not meeting the goals of the SM, a small footprint, low power consumption, quiet.

Here is the best build I could come up with in Canada that tries to replicate the form factor and the specs of the Steam Machine:

Yeah imma need more than 1TB.
