Everytime I click update it just goes back to update not downloading. I pirated the game before actually buying it I hope that doesn’t mean anything since I bought it now.

Are you for real directing the Steam account towards your pirated files and trying to update?
Is downloading them again not an option? Do you use Linux or Windows?
Use Steam to verify game files.
Yea don’t use pirated save files unless you want to get banned.
Search main folder of the game. maybe it’s in “read-only” mode.
Try verify the game files through steam and don’t add any game saves
