For the longest time, I just couldn’t get into turn-based games. They never really clicked with me.
Then I played Marvel’s Midnight Suns. I loved the story, the character relationships, and the progression system. Before I knew it, I was completely hooked on the gameplay.
Eventually, I discovered that the developers were also behind XCOM. Naturally, I gave it a shot, and holy hell. XCOM quickly became one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time.
Now there’s Star Wars Zero Company, which leans much more into the XCOM style than Midnight Suns, and I’m loving every minute of it. The formula works so damn well in the Star Wars universe. They’ve absolutely nailed it.
I’m already looking forward to DLC. Day-one purchase for me.
So here’s my question: What other games in this genre am I missing out on? I’m relatively new to turn-based tactics, and I’m curious what everyone else is playing. What’s your favorite, and what makes it special?

Wasteland 3
Aliens: Dark Descent is real time (time slows down but the xenomorphs are relentless so it doesn’t fully pause) but similar gameplay. It’s amazing and deserves a lot more attention.
On the indie front, Tactical Breach Wizards was very amusing.
Obligatory Boulders Gate 3 shout out. 10/10 turn based rpg.
Jagged Alliance 3 – My fav. Old school action movies-like setting (banana republics, guerrillia, badass commandos). Interesting squad management. Deep tactical combat system. Check it out.
Phoenix Point – xcom formula in post apocalyptic biopunk setting with interesting aiming mechanic.
Clair Obscure: Expedition 33. AMAZING GOTY. also, the feels man… You are not prepared
Marvel’s Midnight Sons is what got me into the genre and gave me the same realisation. Zero Company built on that.
Xcom 2 WOTC on legendary. It’s VERY different. And honestly even better. All research, development, build times etc are doubled, but to balance it out all the enemy deployment times are doubled too so you get a full of guerrilla war. Basic weapons for longer, sectoids and enemy soldiers for longer.
Soldiers get fatigued so sparks are just amazing.
And the enemies are tougher so you will lose missions, abandon objectives, extract as many people as you can but… man it’s fun.
