Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto says “there’s only so many people” Nintendo can reach through consoles like the Switch 2, so “we want to expand” outside of video games

Pokemon has been doing this for 30 years. I think it’s one of the biggest reasons for its success and why it’s the number one media franchise. I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t realize this sooner and try it with Mario and some of their other IP.

This isn’t really news. With 2 movies now and theme parks I’d say this has been the norm for the past half decade.

I think they realised relying completely on games isn’t always the best strategy after the wiiu

Considering I remember Mario cereal and bath soap during the 90s, id say theyve BEEN doing this.

I think once the old guard of Nintendo is gone, sadly, the new guard will be more than content to just rest on the laurels of the IP existing and the creative output of the video games will decline, and more thought will go into theme parks, branding, merchandise, etc. They want to be the Disney of video games. Of course, Disney still makes their main item (movies) but…uhh, maybe you disagree, but…their old movies are just better.

He’s right but like the movies requires context of the games so so much to get worth out of it that I don’t understand the statement.

Like the only people that can get worth out of it are Mario fans and very little kids that like the pretty colors. I think everyone can agree on that.

If you want nintendo franchises to be multimedia and be worth a damn, each multimedia thing they release has to be able to stand on it’s own even a little bit.

Let’s hope their other movies can captivate audiences in the same way that Pixar’s or Dreamwork’s can. The Mario movie (and by the looks of it, the sequel) was servicable, but it would be nice for their other franchises if they didn’t boil their movie adaptions down to just action scenes and references

    8. Cool. Do they have to be terribly reviewed, however? Cause I’d like these films to be ***good***. As films. For everyone.

I see them as the new Disney. Their IP is so good and more kids play Nintendo games than watch Disney stuff. With the expansion to parks and movies, they can push in to other areas.

    10. I hope they don’t end up giving everyone Nintendo fatigue like Disney has done with Marvel and Star Wars

    11. I support this, got friends who are into Pokemon despite not playing videogames because of how huge the merch and anime are

I get it, and as long as the focus is still on videogames, I’m fine with it.
